August/September 2004 Fat, Frumpy and Fifty-one!

August/September 2007 Fit, Fantastic and Fifty-four!

If only in reality it was as easy to change fat to fit, but we know something we really want is not easily achieved. We have to put in as much, if not more effort, than what we want to achieve in the end.

Like I said, 3 years ago I was fat, and frumpy and I had had enough. I couldn’t change my age, but realised I was the only person that could change everything else.

At my heaviest I weighed 97kg, and had been to weight watchers and got down to around 69kgs with diet only no exercise and of course when I stopped the weight came back and I was 97kg again.

Firstly, in a way not recommended by Kylie (and before I started at Studio Glo) I replaced my breakfast with a diet shake, stopped drinking coffee and cut out snacks in between meals. And would you believe, the weight started to drop off!

Then, in a healthier move I took some advice from the Herald-Sun Step Diet. Sensible eating – which we are all meant to do – and exercise, walking every day covering a varying number of steps.

One weekend whilst out walking I passed Studio Glo and grabbed a brochure. Upon returning home I read the brochure and also found an article in the Council magazine. I thought it all sounded really good, so a couple of phone calls later I had an appointment for my first session.

I turned up not really knowing what to expect, and found the 30 minutes went quickly, and I had survived! So from this small beginning my new routine surfaced – one 30 minute session at Studio Glo, long walks on the weekend and improved eating habits.

Everything started to change, weight kept dropping, measurements kept changing (for the better) so I thought 2 x 30 minute sessions a week would be the go.

My first weigh and measure was in December 2004:

Over my time training at Studio Glo, I have had a few trainers and have enjoyed working with them all. They all train differently so it is never predictable.

The trainers encourage, motivate, praise and look after your well being. Always pushing you to do better, but never to the point of injuring yourself. Also, they all have a sense of humour (a pre-requisite) which helps greatly! Especially on those odd occasions when you don’t feel like training.

So, three years on I am fitter than I have ever been, have entered the 15.2km Run for the Kids, 8km Mothers Day Challenge, 10km Run to the G and finished all these events.

The next challenge is the 100km Oxfam Walk in April 2008, with Christine, Chris and Suzanne.

I think back to when I first started at Studio Glo, having to run on the treadmill if the speed was put up to 7kms, or thinking I would collapse when I had to skip for 1 minute. The present couldn’t be so different – 2 training sessions a week, boxacise, yoga, and walking everyday – and with hindsight wishing I had started this exercise regime thirty years ago.

All I know is I couldn’t have achieved this level of fitness without Kylie and the team at Studio Glo.

I could have joined a gym, but wouldn’t have gone. But when you make a commitment to yourself, and an appointment with someone who is willing to help you, you have to keep that appointment, as you don’t want to let yourself or them down.

The two things I have learned from my training is that there is no such thing as a quick fix, or a diet. It has to be a holistic approach to your lifestyle – food, exercise and attitude, and that I will never revert to my earlier fat and frumpy life – I love the way I am now too much for this to happen!
